Pity poor Elina Svitolina–or don't, if you so choose, because she has a lot of time left to win a major or three.

Even so, the Ukrainian star, tapped by many to be among the top three contenders for a Roland Garros singles title, had a rather bizarre experience at the French Open. She went into bona fide "Svitolina mode."

She staged one huge, inspiring comeback against Petra Martic in the fourth round, winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, only to see her chances later against Simona Halep pass through her hands like so much red clay.

Thus she did not make the most of the dearth of past major champions in the round of eight in Paris. That was ultimately Jelena Ostapenko's opportunity to capitalize on.

What Svitolina did provide us was a lesson in focus and desire. She had, and has, the latter in spades. Somehow the former left her when it mattered most. The silver lining is that the 22-year-old will be a huge threat on grass and hard courts. She might yet walk away with a big, important trophy before season's end.
