It seems like speed-dating, frankly. The wild ride of a super-coach, namely a retired star, coming alongside an active player to help them take next steps to greatness, followed by … poof said coach is gone.

Meanwhile, Paul Annacone will join Stan Wawrinka’s coaching team throughout the (fleeting) grass-court season, culminating in his Wimbledon title bid. If there’s anyone who can make Stanimal a winner on a vegetated tennis surface, the Tennis Channel commentator and former advisor to Roger Federer and Pete Sampras may be the one.

It remains to be seen whether the highest profile of the lot, Andre Agassi and Novak Djokovic’s coach-charge relationship, will prove to be of long-term use or a relative dalliance between brilliant, complicated minds.

Somewhere Boris Becker waits in the wings. So does Ivan Lendl. Likewise, John McEnroe.
