Novak Djokovic came into Paris trying to rediscover his 2016 winning ways, but his straight-sets quarterfinals loss to Dominic Thiem created more questions than answers. The aftermath of the loss was disappointing for everyone watching:

The Serb credited Thiem, but also admitted that he is still searching for his confidence. He’s clearly not the same player that dominated the tour by winning the French Open one year ago.

Djokovic will lose the No. 2 ranking when the official rankings are released on Monday. His 5,805 points are his lowest total since 2007 and a far cry from the 16,950 points he held after winning the 2016 French Open.

In his post-match interview, Djokovic admitted that, “it’s a whole new situation that I’m facing.”

He went on to add, "So I guess you’ve got to go through it, try to, learn your lessons and figure out the way, how to get out of it stronger."

What’s the right way for Djokovic to regain his best form? Does he take time off, maybe even skip Wimbledon to prepare for the US Open? Maybe.

Or does he start training intensely under his very new coach Andre Agassi? There’s no word on how long Agassi will continue to help Djokovic, but the Serb talked about needing more time with the American legend.

The tour is getting younger and stronger with talented players like Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios settling in at the top. Veteran champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are enjoying a renaissance and Djokovic's struggling rival Andy Murray has survived to the semifinals.

All Djokovic can do is keep up, but there’s more uncertainty than clarity in his near future.
