Bethanie Mattek-Sands put an end to Roland Garros' most touching storyline on the women's side, Petra Kvitova's comeback. The Czech, back early from a knife attack injury, won her first match back, inspiring everyone—even her opponent Julia Boserup.

Mattek-Sands would emerge the victor against Kvitova on Wednesday by a tight 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) scoreline. But once again, it was about more than just tennis.

"Right here when we’re hugging, I was just saying how inspired I was by her comeback—just with everything she’s gone through," Mattek-Sands said.

Mattek-Sands has come through from qualifying to set up a third-round clash with Samantha Stosur. Meanwhile, two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova will turn her attention to the grass season.

"The fairytale ended. Now, in upcoming weeks, I think it will be business as usual," Kvitova said. "That's what I'm looking forward to, just focusing on the tennis and on the game and everything what I do need to improve to my game."
