With the French Open only a few days away, there are questions surrounding the status of some of the best on the WTA Tour and what state they’ll be in for the tournament.

Here’s a look at where some of the game's elite stand heading into Roland Garros (let's start with the good news):

Sidelined from the tour since December after a knife-wielding intruder injured her left hand, Kvitova announced that her recovery is coming along faster than expected. Things are going so well that the Czech is actually considering playing the French Open.

She has been getting in some clay-court work in Monaco as of late.

The defending French Open champion has had a tough time since her title-winning efforts last year. However, it looked like she was rounding into form just in time with a deep run in Rome last week. That march through the tournament was derailed in the semifinals, as she was forced to retire early on in the first set against eventual champion Elina Svitolina with a neck injury.

The Canadian reached the quarterfinals in Madrid a couple of weeks ago by showing flashes of her former Top 5 form. Unfortunately, she had to pull out of this week’s Nuremberg Cup at the last minute due to a partially torn ligament in her right ankle.

The tournament director said Bouchard told her “she needs a miracle” to play, putting her French Open participation in doubt. She has been spotted on the practice courts in Paris.

The top seed in Strasbourg, France, retired from her opening match against American Shelby Rogers with a back injury.

Wozniacki had a solid start to the year with three final-round appearances and a brief return to the Top 10, but hasn’t had any success during the clay-court season. Against Rogers, Wozniacki had three set points in the first, but ended up losing the set. Getting treatment during the match, she decided to pull the plug before things worsened and jeopardized her chances in Paris.

Probably the closest thing the women’s draw in Paris has to a favorite, the world No. 4 will be entering Paris under a cloud. After taking a big lead in the first set against Svitolina in the Rome final, Halep rolled her ankle. She managed to clinch the set and battled on before eventually losing the match.

Halep, the Madrid champion, is expected to do some damage in Paris—provided there are no lingering issues from what is a torn ligament. But she has said there is a 50/50 chance.

The German has been in incredible form on clay, winning Stuttgart for her second career WTA title. She would have been a dark horse at Roland Garros, but on Wednesday, the world No. 32 suffered a fall in Nurnberg that has pushed her out of contention.

The news was announced of her Roland Garros withdrawal on the same day, meaning the injury to her knee must be significant.
