After months of surviving on just a few photos, the world finally has an official Battle of the Sexes trailer. The tennis flick stars Oscar winner Emma Stone as a 29-year-old Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs.

Directed by Little Miss Sunshine duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Fariss, the film is based on the historic 1973 exhibition match between King and a then-55-year-old Riggs. Carell does his best to embody the role of antagonizer, opening up the trailer by showcasing Riggs' infamous gambling problem. Stone embraced the role of King, a former No. 1 and 12-time Grand Slam champion, despite being a novice.

“What I lacked in tennis skills I hope I made up for in my ability to connect with her essence and understand the greater lesson of what she was saying,” Stone told *PEOPLE* magazine about King.

Of course, the Riggs vs. King match in 1973 was about much more than tennis and gambling. King would break ground as a pioneer for women's equality, and while Riggs struggled with his off-court demons (namely gambling), King had to come to terms with her sexuality.

Battle of Sexes hits theaters on September 22.
