"When in Rome, you have to come to the Colosseum," Sharapova said. "I've been saying that for years yet this is my first trip here."

The oval amphitheater in the city center proved to be a perfect backdrop.

The Russian was joined by Tomas Berdych, who is seeking his first title of 2017.

And the pair even dabbled in some Colosseum tennis.

Sharapova took advantage of her day out to do a little photography of her own:

The three-time Rome champion made her return to the site earlier this week and was greeted by a crowd (and this was just for a practice):

She started her campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 first-round win over Christina McHale. She has now earned enough ranking points to enter the qualifying draw of Wimbledon on her own.

Berdych also kicked off with a win (over Mischa Zverev).
