From match-ups rife with tension to what-in-the-world scorelines to shot-making magic, the WTA Premier Mandatory/ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid has been quite the event. Here’s a look at the highs and lows—and the whoas and wows—of the week.

HAND IT TO THESE TWO

Eugenie Bouchard was not a fan of Maria Sharapova receiving a wild card in Madrid—or any wild card, for that matter. The two met in the second round with Bouchard notching her first win against Sharapova. The handshake at the end sealed the deal.

LUCK’S WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT

If you lose in the qualies, it’s good to hang around the venue just in case you get that spot for the lucky loser. If you happen to have good fortune shining on you, make the most of your opportunity. That’s exactly what Borna Coric did, as the young Croat reached the quarterfinals, knocking off world No. 1 Andy Murray along the way, the second time he’s beaten Murray as a lucky loser.

CUEVAS GOLD

Hitting a tweener? Oh, that’s cute. Pablo Cuevas hit the shot of the tournament, the month, maybe the year, in his quarterfinal win over Alexander Zverev. Cuevas has made leaps and bounds at the Masters level, with three quarterfinal or better performances. If you’re hitting shots like this, things have to go your way.

THEY’VE GOT GAME

Rafael Nadal and David Goffin put on a show for the fans in Madrid, especially in the seventh game of the second set of their semifinal. Nadal, already up a set and a break at that point, was going for more of an advantage, pulling out his best shots. Goffin raised his own level of play, but at the end couldn’t hold the Spaniard back.

NADAL’S RUN, THOUGH…

Speaking of Nadal: He’s turned back the clock, sipped from the fountain of youth, turned up a notch—any cliché you can possibly think of. He’s been unstoppable on clay for weeks now, like it’s 2005. And he even stopped his run of losses against Novak Djokovic in the Madrid semifinals.

6

DOUBLES THE FUN

It was a fun run while it lasted. Top-20 singles stars (and good buddies) Nick Kyrgios and Jack Sock teamed up to play doubles in Madrid. While they lost early in singles, the pair made a run to the semis in doubles, knocking off top teams Rajeev Ram and Raven Klaasen, and Bob and Mike Bryan, while hitting hot shots galore along the way.

KIKI KEEPS KEEPING ON

Raise your hand if you thought Kristina Mladenovic was going to be the most consistent player on the WTA Tour this year. Anyone? No worries if you didn’t see this—no one did. The Frenchwoman’s rise up the rankings continues with her fourth final of the year in Madrid. She’s showing versatility and fight along the way, and appears poised for a Grand Slam breakthrough.

DOWN TO THE WIRE AGAIN (AND AGAIN…)

Players were not giving an inch over the course of the week, with 10 matches settled in a third-set tiebreak. They ranged from the ridiculous (Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon split 6-0 sets before the last one) to the sublime (Dominic Thiem beating Grigor Dimitrov 11-9 in the clincher).
