Rafael Nadal had to win this match against Novak Djokovic. After three years, seven matches and 15 sets of losing to his nemesis, the Spaniard dominated the Serb 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinal of the Madrid Masters.

It was a retro effort similar to the 2012 Monte Carlo Masters when Nadal ripped through Djokovic  6-3, 6-1 to end that seven-match losing streak in their head-to-head rivalry. It all sets up nicely for Nadal’s continued blitz through clay-court Europe and his all-important pursuit of ten French Open titles.

The carnage mercifully ended and Nadal plucked his 24th victory in their 50th meeting. Most important, he played with confidence and composure that had so often defined his glory years.

There’s no question Nadal is the favorite to win the French Open, but who is the second favorite? Certainly not the struggling world No. 1 Andy Murray or “Big-Match Stan Wawrinka” who has been as cold as a Swiss winter.

All signs are pointing to the man from Mallorca right now, but momentum in tennis can change on a dime. Dismiss Djokovic at your own peril because sooner or later he’s going to right the ship and win more big titles.

For now, all eyes are on Nadal. He’s got worthy challengers and a legion of young players who could be spoilers, but he’s reminding the tennis world that there is only one King of Clay.
