There’s still plenty of buzz about Novak Djokovic’s decision to clean house. The world No. 2 parted ways with coach Marian Vajda, fitness coach Gebhard Phil Gritsch and physiotherapist Miljan Amanovic.

His parting with Vajda is particularly significant. The former ATP player teamed up with Djokovic back in 2006 and helped develop the Serb into one of the most dominant champions of the Open era. He was witness to all 12 of his Grand Slam titles and 223 weeks at No. 1.

Vajda was even there with Djokovic’s then-girlfriend Jelena Ristic to applaud his very first ATP title.

He was the lead coach for Djokovic’s first six major titles from 2008–2013, but stepped back in 2014 to spend more time with family.

Boris Becker was brought in to add more offensive aggressiveness to Djokovic’s game, but Vajda often reappeared for support.

Perhaps the most publicly emotional moment of the Djokovic and Vajda partnership came in 2014 at Indian Wells. Djokovic didn't win the Australian Open for the first time since 2010 and there were grumblings that things might not be working out with Becker.

Becker took time off for hip surgery, and Vajda reassumed his leading role with Djokovic. They embraced after he defeated Roger Federer for the title.

While Becker received much credit for Djokovic’s recent dominance from 2015–2016, Vajda continued to appear as a familiar face in the stands.

Djokovic’s greatest triumph, capturing the 2016 French Open, was a milestone achievement for the entire team. They were there to celebrate Djokovic at his highest pinnacle, and few could have foreseen that Becker, Vajda and the entire team would disband within a year.

If Becker was the fire, Vajda was the rock. Last November, Vajda did not blame Djokovic’s efforts in training for his dip in success.

But times have changed for everyone. Ristic and Djokovic married in 2014 and they are expecting their second child. Becker split with Djokovic in December 2016, and Vajda will move on with his blessing for Djokovic to rediscover his dominance.

Djokovic is in Madrid this week and has yet to name a new coach.
