The year was 1993 and Pete Sampras was 22 years old.

The year was 1993 and Pete Sampras was just 21 years old when he reached No. 1 for the first time on April 12.

The start to that season saw him win Sydney, Miami and Tokyo, propelling him to the pinnacle of the rankings.

The American would spend 286 weeks at No. 1 and finish as the season-end No. 1 six times (in a row). While Roger Federer has surpassed his record of 14 majors, he has to finish at No. 1 one more time to match Sampras' record.

Sampras retired after winning the 2002 US Open.
