And with that, they were off.

On Wednesday, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova played each other in the second round of the Volvo Car Open in in Charleston, S.C. Safarova, the 15th seed, won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

While it didn’t match the intensity of their Wimbledon match last year, this wasn’t just any early-round encounter. The two players known as “Team Bucie” have been dominating the doubles scene for the past few years now, with their most recent Grand Slam title coming at this year’s Australian Open.

They celebrated that victory in their own unique fashion.

It’s hard to imagine a pair on either tour that might enjoy each other’s company more, both on and off the court. The two have been a breath of fresh air for the game and appear to be each other’s biggest fans, able to find the lighter moments in any occasion.

Both players are coming off a solid run at last week’s Miami Open, where they both recorded their first wins over Top-10 players since 2015. (Safarova advanced to the quarterfinals, while Mattek-Sands went out in the fourth round.)

Provided the weather holds up, Safarova will be getting a lot of court time today. She plays her third-round match against Laura Siegemund, and later on in the day, Team Bucie takes on wildcards Elizabeth Halbauer and Sofia Kenin.
