The Australian Open final would end with a challenge, not just in the form of the formidable Rafael Nadal, but literally with the Spaniard asking for the Hawk Eye system to save him from defeat.

Still, Roger Federer would not be denied Grand Slam No. 18, despite Nadal throwing everything he had at him.

Watch how Federer won Grand Slam No. 18

Federer got his celebration in the end after moments of uneasiness and a very long 2016 season of pain and struggle. In ousting Nadal, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, the 35-year-old won his first major since Wimbledon in 2012 and finally beat the 14-time Grand Slam champion Down Under.

The only time Federer had faced Nadal in the same round in Melbourne—eight years ago—his night had ended in tears, now all he had left to do was celebrate, both the victory and his return to the throne.

Nadal may have said it best after the match.

"There is a winner, there is a loser. In these kind of matches, anyone can win," Federer said. "Being honest, in these kind of matches, I won a lot of times against him. Today he beat me. Just congratulate him."
