While the world was mixed over whether Sunday's Australian Open felt like a throwback or not, there's a huge possibility that most forget where the Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal rivalry truly began. It wasn't actually at a major.

In the 2005 final, Federer outlasted a teenage Nadal, 2-6, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-1. Despite dropping that first final encounter, Nadal would run away with the rivalry, now leading 23-12.

What's more, the first-ever Venus Williams vs. Serena Williams final was also in Miami, six years earlier in 1999. Older sister Venus won that title match, but like Nadal, Serena has taken over the head-to-head edge, 17-11.

In Melbourne this week, Federer and Serena would both make history with Federer winning major No. 18 in five sets over Nadal, and Serena topping Venus to take home her 23rd Slam.

Never forget about Miami though—the mecca where legendary rivalries begin.
