Before Wednesday, the one time No. 72-ranked Madison Brengle had a chance to play Serena Williams, she managed to win just one game. But in their second-round contest in Auckland, the 26-year-old pulled off the unthinkable, upsetting the world No. 2, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4.

During a changeover with Nicole Melichar (who’s still competing professionally), Brengle chatted casually about how great Serena’s serve is, and came up with a solution.

"Do you feel like I played even uglier off the return, is that a good idea?” Brengle said.

Melichar replied, "I think you might as well try it."

Brengle then came out with the quote of the year (so far):

It's not the first time Brengle and Melichar have come up with comedy gold mid-match. Brengle once said she would "rather chew on a pine cone" than play tennis (during a loss to Caroline Wozniacki).

Williams for her part, leaned on the windy New Zealand conditions for blame.

"I can take solace in the fact that the conditions won't be like this in Melbourne," Williams said. "This is almost not a great opportunity to assess your game to be honest. I'm trying to think of a word for (my performance) that's not obscene, but I can't."
