Poor Marin Cilic.

Three times over the course of the season, he let a two-sets-to-none lead slip away. That’s a rare feat for a whole career, much less a 12-month span.

Of those losses, though, perhaps the most painful one was in the Davis Cup final against someone who knows a thing or two about comebacks.

Juan Martin del Potro, perhaps one of the most snake-bitten players in the history of the sport, found himself once again hitting reset on his career in 2016 after another return from a wrist injury. By the time the Davis Cup finals rolled around, Del Potro had won a title (Stockholm), snagged a silver medal at the Olympics and defeated multiple members of the Top 10.

Now, all that was left was helping Argentina win its first Davis Cup against Croatia in front of a partisan crowd.

Del Potro had known Davis Cup heartbreak before as part of the 2011 squad that lost to Spain in the final.

History almost repeated itself as it looked like the Argentine would once again be on court for the tie-losing rubber. Cilic won the first two sets, putting Croatia one set away from its second Davis Cup.

But as he’s done every time he’s had to relaunch his career, Del Potro dug deep and won the final three sets, leveling the tie at two all.

After the match, del Potro revealed what led him to such a magnificent comeback.

It was all heart.

Argentina's Federico Delbonis would go on to seal the Davis Cup for Argentina by beating Ivo Karlovic.
