With all eyes turning soon on Melbourne for Australian Open, it seemed to be the ideal time to focus our travel spotlight on the resort Down Under that combines tennis and vacation bliss like no other. Tucked away on the northernmost coast of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Hayman has a front-row seat to the underwater action of the Great Barrier Reef.

The private-island resort has a long-standing reputation as one of Australia’s most luxurious getaways. Beachside villas conjure up the clean Asian-inspired architecture of Amanresorts (the projects share an architect) while the lush landscape was redesigned by Aussie TV star and Oprah-approved horticulturalist Jamie Durie.

Restaurants serve Australia’s famously fresh seafood and award-winning wines, and fitness facilities include squash and basketball courts, a personal training room for yoga and Pilates and—yes—new floodlit tennis courts. Tennis has been part of the Hayman experience since 1987 but was elevated to new heights thanks to a partnership with Jim Courier Tennis.

Game matching is offered, and there are a number of good players on the Hayman staff who can jump in to ensure guests get a competitive workout. Private and group instruction is on the menu, along with daily clinics and round robin matches.

Given its exotic, isolated locale and high-end amenities—it’s the kind of place where you can get a massage in the ocean—Hayman has always attracted a glamorous crowd. The resort is beloved by honeymooners and the Aussie A-list, and has also drawn top tennis talent, including Courier and Jennifer Capriati.
