Serena Williams has announced that she will not compete in the WTA Finals due to a persisting shoulder injury, effectively ending her 2016 season.

Williams shared the news in a video message to fans in Singapore saying how disappointed she is to be unable to take part after what she called “a tough year.”

"I'm really, really bummed I won't be able to come compete this year," she also says.

The WTA Finals will take place from Oct. 23–30. Williams does say she hopes to play next year.

The world No. 2 has not competed since losing to Karolina Pliskova in the US Open semifinals.
