It's Day 1 of the US Open and Tomas Berdych is lying in a hospital bed, recovering from appendicitis. The world No. 8 was forced to withdraw from the final Slam of the year due to the ailment.

The 30-year-old was diagnosed in Cincinnati and went back to Europe to recover. His best result in New York was a seminal showing in 2012. It's the first time the Czech is missing from the draw since 2002.
