Tomas Berdych needed three sets to top teenager Borna Coric on Tuesday in Toronto, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Gael Monfils and Stan Wawrinka were both also winners on Tuesday. Canada’s Vasek Pospisil moved on when Jeremy Chardy retired mid-match with a foot injury.

In men's doubles action, Philip Bester and Adil Shamasdin got past world No. 1 singles player Novak Djokovic and Nenad Zimonjic, 7-5, 4-6, (2).
