Williams then overcame surprise semifinalist Kiki Bertens, 7-6 (7), 6-4 to reach the final.

The other semifinal on Friday pitted Garbine Mugurza against Samantha Stosur. The Spaniard won 6-2, 6-4 to reach her first Roland Garros final. Her only other major final appearance was a loss to Williams at Wimbledon last year.

Dominic Thiem reached his first major semifinal on Thursday by topping David Goffin, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-1. The Adidas zebra shirt lives to see another day, but who knows for much longer as he faces world No. 1 Novak Djokovic next. Regardless of the outcome, Thiem will crack the Top 10 when the new rankings come out. Friday’s second semifinal will see defending champion Stan Wawrinka battle against No. 2 seed Andy Murray.

Santa Mirza and Martina Hingis were stunned early in the women’s doubles draw while they were seeking a fourth straight major title together. Now they’ll face each other in the mixed doubles final instead. Hingis, playing with Leander Paes, beat Australian Open champs Elina Vesnina and Bruno Soares, while Mirza and Ivan Dodig slipped past Yung-Jan Chan and Max Mirnyi.
