She may have dropped the first set against Yulia Putintseva, but Serena William’s hope for a 22nd Grand Slam title would not end on Thursday. The world No. 1 stormed back to take the match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. "I think the match was very close and very far from being on my side," Putintseva, ranked No. 60, said. Williams then overcame surprise semifinalist Kiki Bertens, 7-6 (7), 6-4 to reach the final.

The other semifinal on Friday pitted Garbine Mugurza against Samantha Stosur. The Spaniard won 6-2, 6-4 to reach her first Roland Garros final. Her only other major final appearance was a loss to Williams at Wimbledon last year.
