Samantha Stosur battled past another surprise quarterfinalist, Tsvetana Pironkova, 6-4, 7-6 (6). Pironkova, like Rogers, failed to capitalize on set points (in the second). Kiki Bertens kept her best major performance alive by knocking out Madison Keys, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

In men’s action, Novak Djokovic is through to the semifinals after finishing off Roberto Bautista Agut on Wednesday, and toppling Tomas Berdych in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3, on Thursday. The biggest battle Wednesday, at least for two sets, was Andy Murray’s 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-0, 6-2 win over local hero Richard Gasquet. Murray takes on defending champion Stan Wawrinka next after the Swiss beat world No. 55 Albert Ramos-Violas, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7).

After shocking the world by abruptly pulling out of Roland Garros with a wrist injury before his third-round match, Rafael Nadal delivered more bad news on Wednesday. The Spaniard has pulled out of  Queen’s Club, one of the tune up events for Wimbledon. Queen’s Club match play begins June 13.

Meanwhile, Nadal's rival Roger Federer announced some good news. He will return to competition in Stuttgart next week.
