The second seeded Scot trailed 5-4 in the fifth on Tuesday, but took the match, 3-6 3-6 6-0 6-2 7-5. Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber was tossed out in Round 1 to world No. 58 Kiki Bertens (who just won Nurnberg), 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska started off her week strong with a 6-0, 6-2 routing of Bojana Jovanovski, while fourth-seeded Garbine Muguruza needed a little more time to beat Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Shelby Rogers knocked out No. 17-seed Karolina Pliskova, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, while fellow American Christina McHale was upset by French wildcard Myrtille Georges. Cagla Buyukakcay made history by becoming the first Turkish woman to win a main-draw Grand Slam match by beating Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
