Wednesday in Rome wasn’t the best of days for 19-year-old Alexander Zverev as he lost to Roger Federer, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round.

The German up-and-comer was outclassed by the 17-time Grand Slam champion, but there’s certainly no shame in losing to arguably the greatest player in the history of the sport. During the match, Zverev showed that—even in the midst of defeat—he has a great attitude and an extremely likable personality.

Federer had his opponent on the run all day, and on one point the world No. 44 fell into a line judge’s lap after retrieving a shot. As Federer put the point away with a volley, the 6-foot-6 Zverev did this:

The gesture earned Zverev a rousing applause from the crowd, and why shouldn’t it? This is a kid who, despite his work ethic and desire to move up the rankings, obviously doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Federer, who decided that he would play just moments before this match on Wednesday, will take on another rising star in Dominic Thiem in the third round—assuming he’s healthy enough to continue.

Thiem, seeded No. 13, defeated Joao Sousa, 6-3, 6-2.
