On Wednesday at the Madrid Open, Fabio Fognini lost a roller coaster of a second-round match to sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The Italian served for the match at 5-4 in the third, but ended up getting broken before things quickly went south.

Fognini got in trouble for an audible obscenity earlier in the match, and then was handed a point penalty for ball abuse while serving down 5-6, 0-30. After all was said and done, the 28-year-old refused to shake the umpire’s hand, opting instead for a brief thumbs up:

Just one round earlier, Fognini was on the well-behaved side of the court when Bernard Tomic attempted a pitiful baseball bat return on match point:

Truthfully, this was all par for the course for Fognini and Tomic, neither of whom are strangers to on-court incidents or arguments with umpires.
